Colleen Muriel Butler of Parksville, BC, passed away on 16 July 2023 after suffering a traumatic stroke on July 13.
She passed in the loving company of her husband Ron, her 3 children and a number of grandchildren at the Palliative Care Unit of the Nanaimo hospital.
Colleen was born to parents George and Muriel Reid, on 16 September 1933 in the Town of Fairview, Alberta but she lived in nearby Whitelaw. They moved from Whitelaw to Nanaimo where Colleen finished high school. She then went on to study Nursing at St Joseph's Hospital in Victoria and graduated as a Registered Nurse. Colleen worked as a Registered Nurse and a charge nurse for 35+ years mainly at the Whitehorse General Hospital and at the Nanaimo General Hospital.
Colleen met Ron Butler in November 1955. They were married on July 12, 1958, in Victoria, BC and just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Together they raised 3 children: David (Virginia), Sheila (Lyall) and Tim. Colleen is also survived by: Sister Andrea Wallin (John) Brother, Barry Reid and children Alan and Andrew along with their families. Grandchildren – Cameron (Adrienne), Connor (Tanille), Bryan, Skye, Rowynn (Paul), Nolan (Lisa), and Matt Great Grandchildren – Mason, Ryker, Mariah, Walker, Azlyn, Mason, Mya, and Makenna And many, many cousins, and friends!
Colleen was passionate about her family and friends. She and husband Ron, loved to entertain and gave many wonderful and memorable parties that often-included costumes, sometimes crazy dinner menus but always much laughter and fun. She was a volunteer in the community for many years until she was no longer able to put in the hours. She was extremely compassionate and understanding and gave love generously to all she met.
She loved her Red Hat Group and her Sorority and shared many happy events with those groups and her friends. Colleen will be sorely missed by everyone she touched in her life.
The family has entrusted Knox United Church with the arrangements. A Memorial Service is scheduled for Friday July 28 at 2 pm at 345 Pym Street, Parksville with a reception to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice in Colleen’s name.
